The Kraken need to be open to anything ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline

We’re a little over a month away from the NHL Trade Deadline, with teams actively trying to add players to bolster their rosters for a postseason run or sell off assets to help build for the future.

Then, there are teams like the Seattle Kraken. A team that’s lodged in the middle of the Western Conference, where they aren’t close enough to a Wild Card spot to be considered playoff contenders but aren’t far enough down the standings to be certified sellers heading into the deadline.

It’s a tough spot to be in for general manager Ron Francis, who is trying to stick to his process while keeping his team competitive despite fans being disgruntled at the lack of success since the run to the second in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. That said, there are multiple paths Francis and the Kraken can take before March 7.

On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk look at what might end up happening for Seattle over the next several weeks.

Frank Seravalli: I think they should be open to anything. I think the biggest miss on the Seattle Kraken is that they don’t have difference-makers. They don’t have stars. We’ve seen…with Ron Francis’ previous team in Carolina, how difficult that is to acquire those players. They don’t really have a pathway to do so. They aren’t really picking high enough to draft a star, and they don’t have one in their pipeline now. So, what’s the thought process in how you can get one?

I think, whether it’s moving the obvious ones in [Yanni] Gourde or [Brandon] Tanev, or whether it’s thinking a little more outside the box…I think, if you’re Seattle, anything that comes across the pipe, and you’re thinking, “Hey, we can make our team significantly better.” I don’t care how drastic it might be, they should be all ears.
