Seattle Kraken General Manager Ron Francis announced Friday that they had reassigned rookie forward Shane Wright to the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Wright was selected fourth overall in the 2022 NHL Draft. He made the Kraken roster out of training camp. But in mid-November, Wright was reassigned on a conditioning stint to the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the American Hockey League (AHL). He flourished in the AHL, registering four goals in five games and playing top-line minutes. Wright was recalled to the Kraken and registered his first career NHL goal on Dec. 6 against the Montreal Canadiens. The next day, he was loaned to Team Canada. Through 8 NHL games, he has two points.

Wright is coming off a gold medal victory at the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Team Canada captain notched a goal in the final game against Czechia helping Team Canada win the gold medal. Throughout the tournament, he recorded 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points.

“We’re very proud of Shane’s performance at the World Juniors, helping captain Team Canada to a gold medal,” said Francis. “He has a bright NHL career ahead of him with the Kraken and now has an opportunity to lead his junior team as they compete for a Memorial Cup. We look forward to watching him the rest of this season and wish him well.”

The reassignment to the OHL is to allow Wright to have a chance to compete in the 2023 Memorial Cup in Kamloops, B.C. Wright will be joining the Frontenacs but according to Daily Faceoff President Frank Seravalli, a trade will be materialized to send Wright to an OHL contender. The Frontenacs are currently fifth in the OHL’s Eastern Conference. Wright registered 92 points (32G, 62A) in 63 games last season, adding 14 points in 11 OHL playoff games.
