Some organizational depth down the middle for the team in Canada’s capital.

On Friday, the Ottawa Senators re-signed center Jamieson Rees to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2024-25 season.

Rees came to the Senators’ system in March of this past season. He was acquired by Ottawa from the Carolina Hurricanes on March 15 for a 2024 sixth-round pick. The Hamilton, Ontario native spent the first part of the season with the American Hockey League’s Springfield Thunderbirds and Charlotte Checkers before playing the final 14 games of his season with Belleville Senators.

In 51 games, Rees registered just eight assists, posting a plus/minus of -4.

Rees had been with the Hurricanes organization, and they took him in the second round, 44th overall, of the 2019 NHL Draft. He played three seasons with the Chicago Wolves, the Canes’ affiliate up until 2023, winning a Calder Cup with the team in 2022. In 206 AHL games, the 23-year-old has scored 29 goals and 59 assists, including six points in 17 playoff games. He has never appeared in an NHL game.

The former Mississauga Reps star came onto the NHL radar after a fruitful junior hockey career with the OHL’s Sarnia Sting. Rees also represented his country on a few occasions, playing for Team Canada at the 2017 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge and the 2019 IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship. In 2018-19, along with appearing in the CHL Top Prospects Game, Rees helped Canada win gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

As a result of the signing, the Senators have 34 standard player contracts signed for next season. According to CapFriendly, Ottawa is projected to have around $12.5 million in cap space for the 2024-25 campaign.
