Some organizational depth on the back end of the team in Canada’s capital.

On Tuesday, the Ottawa Senators announced they have signed defenseman Filip Roos to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will have a $775,000 cap hit in the NHL and a minor-league salary of $150,000 for the 2024-25 season.

Roos went undrafted, but signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in May 2022, with an AAV of $925,000. While he came to North America from his native Sweden with expectations that he could be an impactful player on both ends of the rink, Roos has not been able to find his name consistently in the NHL lineup. For most of the past two seasons, he has been with the Blackhawks’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. He did not receive a qualifying offer by Chicago after the 2023-24 season, making him an unrestricted free agent.

While he only played four games with Chicago this past season, Roos was a solid asset with the farm team. In 59 games with the IceHogs, the 25-year-old scored two goals and 14 assists. In two seasons with Rockford, Roos has notched five goals and 22 assists in 98 games, with a plus/minus of -17. He has also registered four assists in nine Calder Cup Playoff appearances.

Roos has played 21 games with the Blackhawks, scoring a goal and two assists during his rookie campaign in 2022-23.

The Göteborg native got onto the Blackhawks’ radar after making a name for himself with BIK Karlskoga in Allsvenskan, playing a big role on Skellefteå AIK in the Swedish Hockey League, and Champions Hockey League in 2021-22. That season, Roos also played seven games for the senior national team, appearing in five games in the EuroHockey Tour.

With the signing, the Senators have 41 players under standard player contracts. According to CapFriendly, Ottawa has a hair over $4.4 million in projected cap space.
