Janik was sent to the Senators by the Utah Hockey Club in a trade on Wednesday, in which Utah HC received Egor Sokolov. It is the second year in a row he has been on a one-year contract with a league minimum cap hit.
Janik had spent the last four seasons with the Arizona Coyotes, the team that selected him in the third round, 65th overall, of the 2018 NHL Draft. Though the Nymburk, Czechia native saw some time with the big club, he spent most of his days with the Coyotes’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners. He played a career-high 13 games with Arizona during the 2021-22 campaign, notching two goals and an assist.
The 23-year-old has had a couple of solid seasons in Tucson. During that season two years ago, Janik scored 17 goals and 30 assists for 47 points, the best numbers of his pro career. The closest he came to matching that number came this past season, when the former Hamilton Bulldog potted 16 goals and 20 assists in 55 games.
In 22 NHL appearances, Janik has registered four goals and two assists. In 165 games with the Roadrunners, he has scored 46 goals and 74 assists, including three points in five Calder Cup Playoff games.
Prior to playing professionally in North America, Janik skated professionally in his native Czechia, spending time with Bílí Tygři Liberec of the Czech Extraliga and HC Benátky nad Jizerou of the tier-two league. Janik was part of the Liberec team that competed in the 2017-18 Champions Hockey League. He also represented his country on multiple occasions, including playing for the Czechs at the IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Junior Championships and World Juniors. Janik won silver at the 2017 Hlinka Gretzky Cup with Team Czechia.
