It was a surprisingly busy day on the waiver wire on Sunday, as San Jose Sharks winger Givani Smith, Chicago Blackhawks winger Joey Anderson and Los Angeles Kings defenseman Caleb Jones were all placed on waivers for the purpose of being reassigned to the AHL.

Smith finds himself on waivers after struggling to get into the lineup with the Sharks. He had been a healthy scratch for their past six games, so it made more sense to send him down to the minors to get more ice time in the AHL.

Smith has only played six games with the Sharks so far this season, failing to register a point in any of those games. He’s in the final year of a two-year deal with an $800,000 cap hit, and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Anderson also finds himself on waivers after struggling to get into the lineup with the Blackhawks. He had been a healthy scratch for their past six games, so he goes down to the minors to get more ice time in the AHL.

Anderson had just one assist in 12 games with the Blackhawks this season before being sent down the AHL. He’s currently in the first year of a two-year contract with an $800,000 cap hit.

Jones was placed on waivers after missing the past nine games with an upper-body injury. He had spent the entirety of his absence on injured reserve, so the Kings have likely sent him down to either leave their extra NHL roster spot open or just to have him play in the AHL to get back up to game speed.

Jones had played just five games with the Kings this season prior to his injury, failing to register a point in any of those games. He’s currently signed to a one-year, $775,000 contract, and will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
