A familiar face is stepping into the front office.

On Wednesday, the San Jose Sharks announced they have hired former NHL forward Ryane Clowe as an assistant general manager.

Clowe will work under general manager Mike Grier, joining current assistant GMs Tom Holy and Joe Will in overseeing all facets of the team’s hockey operations department.

The 41-year-old has spent the last three seasons with the New York Rangers, working under GM Chris Drury as a senior advisor and hockey operations advisor. Clowe assisted in all areas of hockey ops, including scouting.

Clowe has a long history with the Sharks. The Fermeuse, Newfoundland native was taken in the sixth round by San Jose in the 2001 NHL Draft. He entered the pro ranks with their former American Hockey League affiliate, the Cleveland Barons, in 2003, and played the next 10 years, eight of which came with the big club. In 423 games with the Sharks, Clowe scored 101 goals and 170 assists, amassing 567 penalty minutes, good for fifth all-time in franchise history.

He was dealt to the New York Rangers during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, before playing the final two years of his career with the New Jersey Devils, retiring after the 2014-15 campaign.

It didn’t take long for Clowe to get to work after hanging up his skates. He was an assistant coach with the Devils from 2016 to 2018, before taking the head coaching job in his home province with the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers. However, 36 games into the season, Clowe stepped down from his post, citing health concerns. He would be hired by the Rangers prior to the 2021-22 season.
