Sharks’ Thomas Bordeleau week-to-week with lower-body injury
San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky announced that center Thomas Bordeleau is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
While the exact cause of the injury is unknown, Warsofsky did mention that it occurred during practice. With the timeline for return being week-to-week, there’s a strong chance that Bordeleau won’t be ready for the start of the regular season.
It’s a big blow to Bordeleau, as he was looking to establish himself as a full-time NHLer during training camp. Last season, he spent more time in the AHL with the San Jose Barracuda, where he had 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 35 games. He did get into 27 games with the Sharks as well, with 6 goals, 5 assists and 11 points in that span.
The Sharks also had an injury scare to a key player for 2024-25, as first-overall pick center Macklin Celebrini left the ice during practice with a lower-body injury. However, Warsofsky was insistent that Celebrini is fine and will return to practice on Wednesday. Celebrini had 32 goals and 32 assists for 64 points in 38 games at Boston University last season.
Warsofsky also provided updates on defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic & Shakir Mukhamadullin and goaltender Yaroslav Askarov, who have all been day-to-day with injuries, saying that they are inching closer but still not completely ready for a return to action. In 2023-24, Vlasic had 6 goals and 6 assists for 12 points in 57 games with the Sharks, Askarov had a 1-0-0 record and a .943% save percentage in 2 games with the Nashville Predators, and Mukhamadullin had 1 assists in 3 games with the Sharks.
Warsofsky also talked about defenseman Lucas Carlsson, who is coming into the season having undergone lower-body surgery in the offseason, mentioning that him being ready for Barracuda training will be close. Carlsson had 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points in 52 AHL games with the Charlotte Checkers last season.
The Sharks will look to take the next step in their rebuild this season after several years of finishing near the bottom of the league. Along with top-five picks Cellebrini and Will Smith joining the team this year, they’ve also added Askarov, Tyler Toffoli, Alex Wennberg, Cody Ceci, Barclay Goodrow, Carl Grundstrom and Ty Dellandrea this offseason. They currently have more than $10 million in salary cap space with no restricted free agents left to sign.
The Sharks are currently winless to start the preseason, having lost their only game 4-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday. They’ll get back into action on Tuesday when they host the Anaheim Ducks in San Jose at 10 p.m. EST.
