The Edmonton Oilers made a rather notable move on Monday, signing veteran forward Corey Perry to a one-year contract worth $775,000.

It is a rather controversial move, as the 38-year-old was only a free agent because his contract with the Chicago Blackhawks was terminated, following an alleged alcohol-fueled incident back in November.

Yet, despite all of that, this move has the chance to pay off for the Oilers.

Edmonton is currently the hottest team in the NHL, riding a franchise-record 13-game win streak. They are slowly climbing their way up the Pacific Division standings after an abysmal start to the season.

While the team has all of the firepower to set records and play well during the regular season, they do not have a ton of playoff experience to get them over the hump. That is where Perry can step in.

Sure, he quickly earned a moniker after ending up on three straight Stanley Cup finalists, but the former champion can bring some needed snarl and knowledge as the Oilers attempt to make a deep run.

The Oilers are third in the Pacific, one point ahead of the fourth-place Los Angeles Kings, and 13 points back of the league-leading Vancouver Canucks.

On Monday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Colby Cohen explain why the addition of Perry can give the Oilers necessary depth.

Colby Cohen: I think this is a great move by the Edmonton Oilers. I think there were a lot of suitors that are playoff teams, teams that have Stanley Cup aspirations looking for Corey Perry. I love this signing for this hockey team. Certainly has some things he has to work on personally, away from hockey. There’s a reason why a lot of these good teams wanted to bring Perry into their locker room.
