Will the Stanley Cup Final go differently for the Oilers this year?

For the second year in a row, we will get a chance to see two teams on near-opposite ends of the continent battle it out for Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Thanks to a 6-3 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, the Edmonton Oilers are off to the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row, setting up another matchup with the Florida Panthers for all the marbles.

Many wonder what could be different from last year’s championship series to 2025. For one, the Oilers will have home-ice advantage in the series, which could be useful if this series goes the distance once again. On top of that, Edmonton will know what to expect this time around.

On Friday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss what could be different for the Oilers this time around.

Frank Seravalli: They’re just a team that gets the job done. They’ve got an opportunity. They seize it. Honestly, it does feel like every time they get that chance, whether it’s on the road or at home, they’re like a dog on a bone. … To me, if you’re trying to make a statement, don’t wait into it. Just get right to the point. They’ve done that just about every time. So, that really bodes well for a team that’s heading into a situation where, yes, still a little bit unfamiliar territory. Now, we flip-flop this series. They’ve got the home-ice advantage as opposed to last year. They waited too long to get into that Stanley Cup final last year. This time around, I think that’s why you might see a different result is because this team has put itself in a position to be able to win. 

Tyler Yaremchuk: I think there was a little bit last year of, like, ‘Very excited to be there’ and maybe wandering a little bit into the unknown for the Oilers. You’re right, they got punched in the mouth very, very quickly. It was one of those like, ‘Oh, how are we down in this series? Has it even began yet?’ So, I do think the vibe will be totally different.
