Dallas Stars head coach Pete DeBoer announced Tuesday that defenseman Miro Heiskanen had successful knee surgery in New York and is expected to be out month-to-month.

It was confirmed last week that Heiskanen would be out week-to-week and would miss the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off where he was going to represent Finland.

Heiskanen was injured in the Stars’ game against the Vegas Golden Knights. During overtime, Golden Knights’ forward Mark Stone was tripped by Stars’ forward Roope Hintz, then fell with his full weight into Heiskanen’s leg. The Dallas defender stayed down on the ice and left the game.

Heiskanen has five goals and 20 assists for 25 points in 50 games with the Stars this season, averaging 25:10 of ice time.

The 25-year-old has 58 goals and 225 assists for 283 points, averaging 24:30 in that span over the past seven seasons in Dallas.

On Saturday, the Stars went out and traded for forward Mikael Granlund and defenseman Cody Ceci, acquiring them from the San Jose Sharks for Dallas’ 2025 first-rounder and Winnipeg’s 2025 fourth-round pick. Ceci brings plenty of veteran experience, including having just been part of the Edmonton Oilers team that made it all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. With Heiskanen out, the Stars had to go and do something.

Brien Rea joined Daily Faceoff Live on Monday and spoke on the Stars situation regarding Heiskanen and the addition of Ceci, “When Miro Heiskanen goes down, you’re losing a 20-minute-a-night player.” Rea said. “You lose someone who is quarterbacking your No. 1 power play…you’re not going to replace Miro Heiskanen, but on paper, there were very specific roles that needed to be checked off.”

The Stars face the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.
