The Tampa Bay Lightning have announced that goaltender Jonas Johansson is out on a day-to-day basis with a lower-body injury.

While the specifics of the injury and the cause of it weren’t mentioned, it’s likely that Johansson sustained the injury during the Lightning’s 4-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. He was starting that night due to Andrei Vasilevskiy being out with an illness, and while he did play the entire game, it’s possible that he hurt something during the game and played through it.

Johansson allowed 3 goals on 20 shots in the loss, finishing with an .850 save percentage.

With Vasilevskiy not nearly as injured as he was last season, Johansson hasn’t had to get into nearly as many games this season. However, he has struggled when he has started, as he has a 6-5-1 record, an .892 save percentage, one shutout and -3.34 goals saved above expected in 13 games.

The Lightning have also recalled Matt Tomkins from their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, in response to the injury. He likely would have been recalled anyways with Vasilevskiy’s status still not certain for Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings, since Tampa had to use emergency backup Kyle Konin for Tuesday’s game.

Tomkins has a 6-8-3 record, a .900 save percentage and one shutout in 17 games in the AHL this season. He also got into six NHL games last season, where he had a 3-2-1 record, an .892 save percentage, and -0.42 goals saved above expected.

The Lightning currently sit in fifth in the Atlantic Division with a 26-20-3 record, which is good enough for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. They’ll look to end their slump of four losses in five games when they host the Kings on Thursday at 7 p.m. EST.
