Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov made history Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins, recording a goal and an assist to reach 100 points on the season, becoming just the 21st player in NHL history to hit the century mark five times in a season.

The Lightning were leading 6-0 with nine minutes to go in the third period.

According to Lightning manager of media relations Benjamin Pierce, Kucherov’s five 100-point seasons are the most by a Russian-born player in history. Penguins’ forward Evgeni Malkin has three, while Washington Capitals’ captain Alex Ovechkin has four.

Last season was Kucherov’s most productive year, finishing 2023-24 with 44 goals and 100 assists for 144 points.

Kucherov has plenty of hardware on his shelf, twice winning the Art Ross Trophy for most points in a season in 2018-19 and 2023-24. In 2018-19, he also won the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award.

Going into Tuesday night’s game, the Lightning were 40-25-5 with 85 points, third in the Atlantic Division. They’re 5-4-1 in their last 10 games.

Forward Brayden Point leads the team with 35 goals, forward by Jake Guentzel’s 34 goals and Brandon Hagel’s 33. Hagel is second in points with 79 points, while Point is third with 69 points.

Captain Victor Hedman, now in his 16th NHL season, leads all Tampa Bay defenders with 54 points, scoring 12 goals and 42 assists.
