Tampa Bay Lightning trade Mikhail Sergachev to Utah Hockey Club
The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to the Utah Hockey Club, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly announced during Day 2 of the 2024 NHL Draft.
Utah sent defenseman J.J. Moser, center Conor Geekie, a 2025 second-round pick, and the No. 199 overall selection in this year’s draft to Tampa Bay in exchange for Sergachev, who is signed through the end of the 2030-31 season at an $8 million cap hit.
Sergachev, 26, appeared in 34 games with the Lightning during the 2023-24 regular season, collecting two goals and 19 points while averaging 22:33 of ice time per night. He missed most of the year with a broken leg that was believed to be season-ending — until he returned for two games with the Lightning in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Montreal Canadiens originally selected Sergachev in the first round (No. 9 overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft. The 6’1″, 217-pound left-shot defender appeared in four games with the Canadiens during the 2016-17 season before being flipped to the Lightning in exchange for forward Jonathan Drouin.
Sergachev subsequently appeared in 471 games over parts of seven seasons with the Lightning, collecting 48 goals and 257 points in the regular season and helping the club win back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.
Moser, 24, is a 6’1″ left-handed defender who collected five goals and 26 points while averaging 20:34 of ice time in 80 games with the Arizona Coyotes during the 2023-24 regular season. The 2021 second-round pick is a restricted free agent in need of a new contract this summer.
Geekie, 20, was arguably the Coyotes’ top forward prospect. The 6’4″ center racked up 43 goals and 99 points in 55 WHL games split between the Wenatchee Wild and Swift Current Broncos during the 2023-24 WHL season.
Shortly after trading for Sergachev, Utah pulled the trigger on yet another deal for an established defenseman, trading second-round picks in the 2024 and 2025 drafts to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for John Marino. Those two will join the likes of Sean Durzi, Michael Kesselring, Juuso Valimaki, and Max Szuber in Utah.
