The 2024-25 season will be extremely important for Trevor Zegras

After storming onto the NHL scene in 2021-22 with a 61-point rookie campaign filled with flashy highlight reel plays, earning himself the second-most votes for the Calder Trophy, Trevor Zegras hasn’t exactly taken the necessary steps to cement himself as an elite player for the Anaheim Ducks. He more or less stagnated in 2022-23 with a 65-point season, and then amidst a plethora of injuries in 2023-24, he had just 15 points in 31 games.

Will we ever see Zegras take that next step towards looking like an elite NHL talent, or will he be stuck in this middle ground of having the tools but not using them to their full potential? Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli talked about Zegras as a potential bounceback candidate in the 2024-25 season on Daily Faceoff Live.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I know his name has been thrown around in trade talks a little bit and things like that, but with Zegras and Anaheim, there’s so much young talent around him now, and I feel like he could lead to two things. It could either that be some young guys end up jumping him and getting a bit more of those minutes, or that he finally has a boatload of talent to play with. Which way do you thinking it goes?

Frank Seravalli: Yeah, I tend to lean more towards “there’s so much talent that that rising tide will lift all boats”. And there’s no question that last year was a disappointing season with what Zegras went through, and his name was obviously in some trade rumors and things like that of him being available.

This is gonna be a pretty big year for Zegras in terms of dictating what that future looks like. I love the way that he finished off last season in the last week or so. I thought that was big for him to go into the summer feeling good about where he’s at and see if he can pick up exactly where he left off.
