The Calgary Flames have been one of the league’s biggest surprises in 2024-25, going 26-21-7 and holding on to a playoff spot in February. However, the club has lost five of their last seven games, and rookie goalie Dustin Wolf has struggled recently, losing four of his last five starts.

On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Flames’ recent string of losses, and why the two-week break for the 4 Nations Face-Off couldn’t have come at a better time.

Tyler Yaremchuk: The Flames lose again on Thursday night, and the breaks coming up and maybe it’s coming at a good time, with Calgary being flat-toed a little bit, here. They’re 5-5-0 in their last 10 games, and one guy that’s stood out is Dustin Wolf. Listen, don’t take this as me disparaging Dustin Wolf, he’s had an amazing season, he 100 percent deserves to be a Calder Trophy finalist, and without him, where would the Flames be without him?

But in his last two games, he’s allowed nine goals against, and he’s lost four of his last five stats. I think this break is coming at a good time for Wolf and the Flames.

Frank Seravalli: I think you’re right. Two things: the workload has significantly increased for Wolf. It’s Feb. 7, and he’s already made 13 starts in 2025. That’s a lot. The second thing is as much as the Flames have hit a bit of a rut here, I just want to provide some perspective:

Think back to last year’s All-Star break. Elias Lindholm was traded at the start of that, and all the names that have been shipped out between now and the start of last season, it’s been a wildly different team. I know they’re better off for it, but it gives you some idea of that there’s been a lot of change, and the fact this team is seven points clear of the Anaheim Ducks, nine points clear of the Seattle Kraken and right on the heels of the Vancouver Canucks.

All things considered, the Flames are in a pretty fine spot.
