The Calgary Flames could look to move up higher in the NHL Draft

The Calgary Flames had a lacklustre 2023-24 season, going 38-39-5 with 81 points, fifth in the Pacific Division and failing to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

However, there’s hope as the offseason begins. The club has two first-round picks in the June 28 NHL Entry Draft, including two picks in the second, third and fourth round, so they have some capital to work with and the ability to make a splash on Friday.

Could the club select Tij Iginla, the son of franchise legend Jarome Iginla? Could they move up to take a top prospect? Or might they move back and continue to collect assets?

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Flames’ offseason and what the club should try to do in this Friday’s Draft.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Let’s start with draft talk. When it comes to the Flames trading up in the draft, is there smoke, fire or false alarm?

Frank Seravalli: Fire. To be honest, they’re one of a few teams you could see trade back, depending on how the board goes. They’re obviously paying attention to Tij Iginla and where he ends up going. His father Jarome works in the organization and is close friends with Craig Conroy. I’m sure there’s some internal and external pressure to get him, but that’s not the only guy who they have their sights set on.

What if the board breaks a certain way? What if they see a guy available at a lower spot than they thought? Do they have the assets to do so? Conroy has assembled a ton of picks based off last season’s trades, and while he’s got some capital to work with, he’d have to really push.
