The Carolina Hurricanes were in full control against the New York Islanders
With a 6-3 win over the New York Islanders Tuesday night, the Carolina Hurricanes won their first-round series 4-1, advancing to the second round and now preparing to face the New York Rangers in Round 2.
The Hurricanes seemed to dominate most of the series against the Islanders, but they will face a formidable foe in a Rangers team that won the 2023-24 Presidents’ Trophy, and finished the season just three points ahead of Carolina in the standings.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Hurricanes-Islanders series and what fans should expect in a second-round matchup between the Metropolitan Division’s two best teams.
Tyler Yaremchuk: There will be no Game 6 between the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders as Carolina finishes them off in five games. The Hurricanes were the better team, they were going to win, it was just a matter of how many games.
Frank Seravalli: One hundred percent agree, I called it a sweep before it started, the Islanders gutted out a Game 4 win to force a Game 5. For the Hurricanes, you mostly get through the first round unscathed. They were clearly outclassing New York, and I think getting through this round, for both the New York Rangers and Hurricanes, was just keeping your focus, because you knew this massive collision between the two was coming.
Both those teams took care of business. Across the NHL, Round 2 is going to be absolutely electric. This might have been the most boring first round in 10-plus years, but this next round could be some of the best hockey we see. The Presidents’ Trophy-winning Rangers and a Hurricanes squad that was right behind them in the standings, this should be a fascinating matchup.
