The sports world saw Alex Ovechkin make history on Sunday, when he scored his 895th career NHL goal, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record.

The league’s goal record was one of many held by Gretzky that looked impossible to break. His assist and point record of 1,963 and 2,857, respectively, seem like a long shot for anyone to come close to, but with the rise of high-production offensive seasons, some are wondering: could someone hit the 2,000-point mark?
Jaromr Jagr is second on the all-time point list with 1,921, and the two closest active players are Sidney Crosby (1,682) and Ovechkin (1,619). Another player who has a chance is Connor McDavid, who in his 10th NHL season has already reached 1,072 points in just 708 career regular-season games. Ovechkin has hinted at his preference to go back to Russia once his contract is finished after the 2025-26 season, so if both Crosby and McDavid stay healthy: could they hit 2,000 points?
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Matt Larkin discuss the race to 2,000 and who is more likely to do it.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Can Crosby be the one to get to 2,000? He would probably have to play four or five more seasons at this point. McDavid is certainly pacing to do that, but you never know with health. One of the great pieces of NHL trivia is that Gretzky has more assists than any other player has points.
Crosby is 318 points away from 2,000, and McDavid is more than halfway there. What do you make of the race to 2,000?
Matt Larkin: I don’t think Sid is going to get there. He probably gets close, but I know relative to his age, 2,000 is a big number to get to. I do think McDavid does it, based on how dominant and consistently dominant he is. He’s been relatively durable, besides his rookie season and this season.
I think when McDavid retires, he’ll pass Jaromir Jagr for second all-time in points, as well as second all-time in assists.
