Makar was drafted by the Avs with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2017 draft. After spending two years playing NCAA hockey for Massachusetts, Makar broke into the NHL and scored 50 points in 57 games, good enough to earn him the Calder Trophy for the league’s top rookie.
In 2021, Makar had yet another outstanding season with the Avs, scoring 44 points over the course of 44 games along with 10 points in 10 playoff games. He finished second in Norris Trophy voting behind New Your Rangers defenceman @Adam Fox.
This contract will give Makar the fifth-highest cap hit in the league among defencemen, behind Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty, the recently-signed Seth Jones, and Roman Josi. His deal will eat up four control years and two unrestricted free agency years.
