The Rangers have a special prospect in Gabe Perreault
While many are focused on what is going on right now with the New York Rangers, there is a player who is going to be a force in the near future.
Forward Gabe Perreault was taken by the Rangers in the first round, 23rd overall, in the 2023 NHL Draft. He was coming out of the U.S. National Team Development Program with a lot of hype and joined a stacked Boston College squad last season.
With 19 goals and 41 assists for 60 points, he ended up finishing fourth on the team in scoring behind current NHLers Will Smith (San Jose Sharks) and Cutter Gauthier (Anaheim Ducks), along with teammate and Washington Capitals prospect Ryan Leonard.
Perreault is scoring at a torrid pace again this season, leading the Eagles with 13 points in eight games.
On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Steven Ellis joined Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli to explain what makes Perreault unique.
Steven Ellis: [The Rangers] got a special prospect. You can look at the guys he’s playing with…James Hagens–a top prospect for 2025. Last year, he played with Will Smith as a centerman. He’s been with Ryan Leonard for quite a long time now…He had 132 points, which is a single-season USNDTP record. You don’t do that by accident, but it still felt like Will Smith and Ryan Leonard were doing all the work. What we saw last year, whether it be the World Juniors where he put up 10 points or the 60-point output that he had in college as a freshman, this is a player that just transitioned into a play-driving machine.
A big problem for me and many others heading into his draft was he wasn’t a good skater. That doesn’t feel like that’s a problem now. He’s a lot more explosive, much better on the backchecking element. He’s a more well-rounded player. He could be a top-six player for the Rangers immediately once the college season’s over…
