The Red Wings’ defense core is still a jumbled mess
One of the teams expected to make a considerable jump this season and challenge for a playoff spot is the Detroit Red Wings. With a number of offensive weapons and a youthful group coming into the fold, there was a lot of excitement around Hockeytown heading into the 2024-25 campaign.
However, things have not quite worked out as planned. Despite a three-game win streak earlier this month, Detroit has gone on to drop each of its last three games, allowing 14 goals over that span, including six to the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night.
There is a glaring issue on the back end. While goaltenders Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot have done their best to give the Wings a chance, the players in front of them has been subpar, to say the least. Detroit has been outshot in all but one game so far this season. With talented young players on the blue line like Mortiz Seider and Simon Edvinsson, and a number of veterans such as Jeff Petry and Ben Chiarot, the Red Wings need to figure things out and fast.
On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk break down the defensive woes in the Motor City.
Tyler Yaremchuk: They aren’t looking like a team that’s ready to take that step into the playoffs. Their blue line is not good enough…They should have spent more money on the blue line and now they’re at a point where Simon Edvinsson, rookie defenseman, is got to be playing top-pair minutes.
Frank Seravalli: I don’t think their defense corps is anywhere it needs to be. I picked them to finish last in the division. It’s still a real possibility. It’s a jumbled mess right now. I like what they have at forward right now, it’s just Edvinsson and Mo Seider, that can’t be the entire makings of your defense corps.
