Seattle Kraken have been a disaster so far in 2023-24
The first four games of the Seattle Kraken’s 2023-24 season has been a disaster.
With a record of 0-3-1, including a 4-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night, the franchise’s third season of existence has not gotten off to a good start.
The 2022-23 campaign was a big step in the Kraken’s development, with a 46-28-8 record resulting in 100 points and a playoff spot, including a first-round victory over the Avalanche and a hard-fought second-round loss to the Dallas Stars in seven games.
But this season, the Kraken have been shutout twice in their first four games, and have only scored once in the other two. No one makes the playoffs in October, but you can dig yourself into a hole before your season really gets started.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Kraken’s tough start and what may be at the root of their problems.
Tyler Yaremchuk: It’s ugly in Seattle, and I don’t think this is just a random early season slip-up. I think there’s legitimate concern with their lack of scoring, Frank. They’re averaging 0.8 goals per game, they’re one of two teams in the league who don’t have a win yet, and they’ve played four games.
I think this team is legitimately going to struggle to score this season, and I think it’s going to sink them.
Frank Seravalli: I certainly wouldn’t bet against that. Take a look back at last year, all 18 skaters on their team had 20 points. Tell me a team where that happens? Where 18 or more guys have 20 points?
Tyler Yaremchuk: Thirteen players had at least 13 goals!
Frank Seravalli: The depth scoring was coming at you in waves, and that’s what enabled them to cruise within one game of the Western Conference Final last year and exceed all expectations.
I don’t think they’re gonna continue scoring at a 0.8 goals-per-game clip, but at the same time, I think there’s enough question marks there with how bad their goaltending was last year…then look out, it could be a really tough year in the Pacific northwest.
