The Stars are struggling, but there’s little reason to be concerned
The Dallas Stars came into the 2024-25 season with high hopes, expecting to make another run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs after a disappointing Western Conference Final elimination last spring.
But injuries and a lackluster start on offense have put them in the mushy middle at the Christmas break, with a 19-13-0 record and 38 points, just one point shy of the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Stars’ recent stretch of mediocrity and why fans shouldn’t be too worried going into the 2025 portion of the regular season.
Tyler Yaremchuk: In the Central Division, the Dallas Stars have hit a little bit of a rough patch in their season. For Dallas, they’re 5-5-0 in their last 10 and have lost their last two games, but here’s why I’m not worried about them: you look at that roster, and I say that it’s still really, really good.
Even with the injury to Tyler Seguin, they’re solid. With that injury, it gives me more belief and hope in Dallas, because they might be able to add something really significant before the trade deadline. To me, the mark of a truly elite team is that their bad stretch is “average hockey,” with a couple losses they should have won, but they’re not getting blown out or outplayed.
If I’m a Stars fan, I’m not losing any sleep over the holidays. Agree or disagree?
Frank Seravalli: Agreed. They’re the best defensive team in hockey, they’ve given up the fewest goals against this year. Their offense has been very average, and I think it really hurt them more than we all realize, missing Tyler Seguin. That said, I also think this team, because they’ve had so many deep playoff runs and they’re stacked with veterans, it’s probably hard to get up for the regular season. You’re gonna hit some rough patches and a malaise here or there.
I think what’s exciting, if you’re a Stars fan, is how they could use that Seguin money when it comes to (long-term injured reserve) and the trade deadline, if you could spend that then get him back in the playoffs, look out baby. This is the year the Stars break through.
