This Week in the NHL: Crosby to pass another legend on all-time scoring list?
With 32 teams, games every night and countless narratives emerging, the NHL season can make one’s head spin, and it’s easy to miss out on the weekly storylines. Not to worry; every Monday from October to April, I’ll map out the major events, games, plotlines and milestones on tap for the next seven days.
So what’s happening the week of Oct. 26 – Nov. 1?
Oct. 31: Welcome to ‘Hockey Halloween’
Yes, this is actually an official thing. I’m not making ‘Hockey Halloween’ up. The NHL will scatter 10 games across Saturday, the most on Halloween in 11 years, beginning with the Boston Bruins hosting the Chicago Blackhawks at 1:00 p.m. ET, while the Calgary Flames visit the Colorado Avalanche in the day’s only late game. Happy trick-or-treating, folks.
Sidney Crosby to crack top six scorers of all time?
Every time Crosby, 39, achieves another career accolade, we should thank our lucky stars that he got through the scary concussion problems that threatened his career 15 years ago. He has left them behind to become one of the sport’s longest-tenured superstars. Eleven games into season 22 of his legendary career, Sid sits at 1,767 points. He’s just five away from passing Marcel Dionne for sixth on the NHL’s all-time scoring leaderboard, and the Pittsburgh Penguins play twice this week. Later this season, health permitting, Crosby will catch Ron Francis (1,798) for fifth. Crosby is a near lock to crack the top three and maybe even the top two by the time he retires.
Erik Karlsson, top-10 scorer of all time on ‘D’?
Could Crosby and Karlsson achieve amazing milestones on the same night? Karlsson, a three-time Norris Trophy winner, is just one behind Chris Chelios’ 948 career points. When Karlsson passes him, he’ll crack the league’s all-time top 10 in scoring among defensemen.
