Auston Matthews continues to make his mark on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ history books.

During Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Maple Leafs’ captain scored four minutes into the second period, giving him his 22nd goal of the season and 390th of his career, passing Darryl Sittler for the second-most goals in Toronto franchise history.

The 27-year-old Matthews is now just 31 goals away from passing Mats Sundin for the No. 1 spot on the Maple Leafs’ all-time list.

Matthews has been one of the NHL’s best goal scorers of the 21st century, winning the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy three times in the last four years. His 69 goals in 2023-24 was the most goals by any player since Mario Lemieux scored 69 in 1995-96.

Now in his ninth NHL season, Matthews has 390 goals and 309 assists for 699 points in 607 career regular-season games.

Mitch Marner assisted on Matthews’ goal, giving him his 714th career point and passing George Armstrong for sole possession for fifth on the Maple Leafs’ all-time point list.

Marner now has a team-leading 75 points through 18 goals and 57 assists. Also in his ninth NHL season, Marner has 212 goals and 502 assists for 714 points in 635 career regular-season games.

Going into Sunday, the Maple Leafs are 37-20-2 with 76 points, second in the Atlantic Division.
