One of the fan favorites in the Six might be out for some time.

After practice on Friday, Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said that forward Max Domi is listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

It is unknown when or where Domi was hurt, but he was involved in an altercation during the second period of the Leafs’ 6-5 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night. The former London Knight did not take too kindly to seeing Auston Matthews entangled with Simon Nemec, as Domi stepped in and fought the Devils’ defenseman.

Domi and Nemec were both handed five-minute majors for fighting, while Domi was handed an extra two minutes and a misconduct for instigating the skirmish.

Domi has been healthy all season, playing in all 79 games with Toronto. The Winnipeg native has scored nine goals and 47 points, not quite scoring at the same clip that saw him register 56 points when he split time with the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars last season.

Since being selected 12th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the then-Phoenix Coyotes, Domi has started bouncing around the league as teams look for tougher players with skill that can be useful in the playoffs.

After three seasons with the Arizona Coyotes, Domi spent two years with the Montreal Canadiens. He followed that up by playing with the Columbus Blue Jackets for a little over a season before being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. After signing with the Blackhawks in 2022, he was dealt to the Stars before last year’s deadline.

Domi signed a one-year contract with the Leafs last July, with a $3 million cap hit.

In 660 NHL games, he has scored 130 goals and 417 points, including 22 points in 43 playoff games.

The Maple Leafs (46-24-9) are third in the Atlantic Division, five points behind the Florida Panthers for second, but are also five up on the fourth-place Tampa Bay Lightning.
