The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a crucial blow in the crease on Thursday night.

In another edition of the Battle of Ontario against the Ottawa Senators, goaltender Joseph Woll suffered an apparent lower-body injury past the halfway mark of the third period.

The injury occurred on what looked like a routine save by the 25-year-old, but he quickly went down in an obvious amount of pain.

Martin Jones went into the game in relief. He was just called up to the Leafs from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, on Thursday, as Ilya Samsonov was out due to illness.

Woll left the game with the Leafs leading the Sens, 3-2. He was a huge reason why Ottawa was not out in front, as the shots were 31-17 in favor of the Senators when he was helped off the ice.

The Leafs managed to hang on for a 4-3 win.

Head coach Sheldon Keefe said after the game that “[Woll] will miss some time,” and that more testing will be done when the team returns home.

The Dardenne Prairie, Missouri native had taken over the No. 1 job in Toronto. After Matt Murray was placed on LTIR, and Samsonov not having the best of seasons, Woll has stepped up when called upon. Heading into the matchup with Ottawa, he was 8-5-1 with a 2.82 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.

Woll had played sporadically over the last couple of seasons, filling in for the likes of Jack Campbell, Petr Mrazek, Erik Kallgren and more.

The extent of the 2016 third round pick’s injuries were not immediately available. Woll had suffered a shoulder injury prior to the 2022-23 regular season, returning to action in November.

Woll made himself an NHL prospect by playing well in three years at Boston College, and was the starter for Team USA at the 2018 World Juniors.
