Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mark Giordano sets new NHL record with 2,045 blocked shots
Mark Giordano is the National Hockey League’s new blocked shots king.
The veteran Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman set a new NHL record on Sunday evening with his 2,045th career blocked shot. Fittingly, Giordano did so against the Seattle Kraken, the team with whom he served as captain during the 2021–22 season.
Giordano set the record late in the second period at Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday, squaring up in front of a blast by Kraken defender Carson Soucy and successfully redirecting the puck into the corner of the defensive zone.
Kris Russell, Giordano’s former teammate with the Calgary Flames, previously held the record with 2,044 blocked shots in 912 career games with the Flames, Columbus Blue Jackets, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, and Edmonton Oilers.
Giordano also scored for the Maple Leafs in Sunday’s game, responding in the first period after Vince Dunn opened the scoring for the Kraken. Timothy Liljegren and William Nylander picked up the assists on Giordano’s fourth goal of the season.
Signed by the Flames in 2004 as an undrafted player out of the OHL, Giordano made his NHL debut with the Flames during the 2005–06 season and remained with the organization until 2021. The Toronto product won the Norris Trophy with the Flames in 2019.
Through 1,084 career NHL games with Calgary, Seattle, and Toronto, Giordano has collected 155 goals and 566 points. He’s also recorded nine points (one goal, eight assists) in 30 playoff contests.
And, as of Sunday, he holds a particularly painful NHL record.
