Leafs’ Mitch Marner on being asked to waive no-trade clause: ‘I had a feeling something might happen’

With Mitch Marner’s contract set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 NHL regular season, rumours have swirled over how the Toronto Maple Leafs plan to move forward with their star winger.
On Saturday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the Leafs were in deep negotiations with the Carolina Hurricanes for Mikko Rantanen, who ended up being dealt to the Dallas Stars.

Friedman says the Hurricanes asked for Marner as part a possible deal involving Rantanen, and that the Leafs approached Marner about a potential exchange, but he declined to waive his full no-movement clause.
After Toronto’s Saturday night game to the Colorado Avalanche, one they loss 7-4, with Marner recording two goals, reporters asked the Leafs’ leading scorer his thoughts on being asked to waive his no-movement clause.
“I wasn’t focused on it. I had a feeling something might happen,” Marner said.
