Twelve hours after the Stanely Cup was hoisted, the Toronto Maple Leafs were hard at work.

They put the finishing touches on a two-year, $2.8-million extension with a $1.4-million cap hit for restricted free agent Timothy Liljegren.

According to PuckPedia, Liljegren will earn $1.3-million in salary in the first year and $1.5-million in salary in the second year. Upon expiration of this deal, PuckPedia reports Liljegren will be an RFA with arbitration rights and a $1.5-million qualifying offer. At that time, he will be two years away from unrestricted free agency.

The 23-year-old drew in for 61 games last season scoring five goals and 23 points while playing in two playoff games. He was tied for 11th place in Calder Trophy voting this year as the NHL’s top rookie.

Liljegren was drafted by the Leafs 17th overall in 2017. This season was the first full campaign where Liljegren was with the NHL club. But in 2017-18, Liljegren was a key contributor to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, winning the Calder Cup. It was his first year of hockey in North America, and that season he scored one goal and 17 points in 44 games.
