Toronto Maple Leafs sign Mark Giordano to two-year contract extension

Mark Giordano is staying home.

The 16-year NHL veteran has signed a two-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs with an AAV of $800,000, the club announced Sunday.

The 38-year-old joined the Leafs in a deal with the Seattle Kraken the night before the NHL’s trade deadline this past March. He drew into 20 regular-season games with the Leafs down the stretch, scoring two goals and 12 points while averaging 19:12 TOI per game.

His deal is without a doubt a hometown discount that will likely carry him to the end of his NHL career. This past year was the final season of a six-year deal initially signed with the Calgary Flames that paid him an AAV of $6.75-million. As an unrestricted free agent, Giordano surely could’ve signed a deal paying him a higher AAV.

A vocal leader and former captain, Giordano appeared in all seven of the Leafs’ playoff games this year notching two assists.

In his brief time, his underlying numbers showed well. With him on the ice at 5-on-5, the Leafs controlled 52.8 percent of the shot attempts, 53.95 percent of the goals scored and 54.35 percent of the expected goal share.
