The PWHL announced on Tuesday that Toronto Sceptres defender Renata Fast had been fined $250 for her actions in Sunday’s 2-1 overtime loss to the Minnesota Frost.

The incident occurred at the 3:23 mark of the first period, when Fast struck Minnesota’s Kendall Coyne Schofield in the head with her stick, a call that went unpenalized by the game’s officiating crew. The PWHL states that Coyne Schofield was in a vulnerable position and that the contact compromised her safety.

Tuesday’s fine marks the first for Fast in her PWHL career, which has seen her take on a starring, top pairing role with the Sceptres through the league’s first two seasons.

Through the 2024-25 season, Fast has scored five goals and 20 points in 23 games, surpassing her 24-game total from the 2024 inaugural season, when she scored three goals and 13 points.

Since joining the Sceptres, Fast has been one of the league’s standout blueliners, initially playing with Team Canada defensive partner Jocelyne Laroque before the latter was traded to the Ottawa Charge. Since that trade in December, Fast has played primarily alongside Savannah Harmon, who came to Toronto from Ottawa in the same exchange.

In addition to her PWHL career, the Burlington, Ont. native has been a critical member of Team Canada. She helped the national team to Olympic gold at Beijing 2022 and silver at PyeongChang 2018 and has won three IIHF World Championship gold medals, most recently in 2024.

Also in Tuesday’s release, the PWHL suspended Minnesota forward Britta Curl-Salemme for an illegal hit in the same game.

After struggling through the start of the season, the Sceptres have been in strong form as they enter their final seven regular season games, sitting second on 36 points, holding a slight lead on the third and fourth place Boston Fleet and Minnesota, both sitting on 35 points.

The Toronto Sceptres face the last-place New York Sirens on Wednesday on home ice.
