On Monday, the Toronto Sceptres announced that the team has signed forward Clair DeGeorge to a one-year contract for the 2024-25 season.

DeGeorge is a bit of a journey-player so far in the short history of the PWHL. The Anchorage, Alaska native spent the inaugural season with Minnesota, helping the team win its first of two Walter Cups. Then, she signed with the Montreal Victoire this past year, playing a depth role on a team filled with stars like Laura Stacey, Jenn Gardiner and captain Marie-Philip Poulin.

DeGeorge is excited for a potentially elevated role with her new team.

“In becoming a Sceptre,” DeGeorge explained in a release. “I am excited for the opportunity to develop as a player and experience the electrifying support from Toronto’s fans. I hope to bring not only my love for the game and support for teammates, but to bring my size, speed, and vision on the ice.”

While she has played a bulk of the games over the league’s first two seasons, the 26-year-old hasn’t really had much of a presence on the offensive end, but has proven to be a viable asset in the defensive zone, something Sceptres general manager Gina Kingsbury expects her to bring to bring to Toronto.

“Clair is a 200-foot centre that is defensively responsible with some offensive upside,” Kingsbury said. “She will bring PWHL experience to our lineup, including being a Walter Cup Champion.”

In 49 regular-season games in the PWHL, DeGeorge has registered no goals and three assists, along with an even plus/minus. She has yet to score a point in 11 playoff games.

Along with winning a championship in the PWHL, DeGeorge also has hardware from her amateur years. She won gold with Team USA at the 2017 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship, along with winning an NCAA championship with Ohio State in 2022.

DeGeorge will be with some familiar faces in Toronto, as former Victoire players Elaine Chuli and Claire Dalton also signed with the Sceptres last week. With the addition of DeGeorge, Toronto has 11 of a possible 23 players signed through the 2025-26 season.
