The PWHL’s first-ever MVP is staying in the Big Smoke.

The Toronto Sceptres announced Tuesday that they re-signed forward Natalie Spooner to a two-year contract extension, keeping her with the club through the 2026-27 season.

“Natalie has been an important piece to our puzzle in Toronto,” said Sceptres General Manager Gina Kingsbury. “She is a key member of our organization both on and off the ice. She is a world-class athlete that has shown just how impactful she can be in this league.”

Spooner scored three goals and two assists for five points in 14 games with the Sceptres in 2024-25 after missing half the season with a knee injury suffered against the Minnesota Frost in the first round of the PWHL playoffs in May 2024.

“I’m incredibly proud and excited to sign an extension with Toronto!” Spooner said in a team statement. “As someone born and raised in Toronto, it means so much to represent my hometown. This city, this team, and our amazing fans have a special place in my heart.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue building something special here and can’t wait to bring a Walter Cup to Toronto,” she continued.

Spooner’s first PWHL season was one for the ages. In 2024, she won the Top Goal Scorer and Points Leader awards after finishing with a league-high 20 goals and 27 points.

Spooner was named the league’s Forward of the Year, becoming the first recipient of the Billie Jean King MVP Award, and was also named the IIHF Female Player of the Year.

Internationally, Spooner won two Olympic gold medals with Canada in 2014 and 2022, as well as three World Championships in 2012, 2021 and 2024.
