A change of scenery in 2025-26 could prove huge for Tristan Jarry

It’s been a difficult season for Tristan Jarry, the 29-year-old Pittsburgh Penguins’ netminder who in just his second year of a five-year, $26.88 million contract, has been sent up and down to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

But Jarry has been with the NHL club since the first week of March, and since March 30, he’s gone 4-0-1 with a .922 save percentage (SV%) in his last five starts. While the season may be lost for the Penguins, who are 33-35-12 and currently seventh in the Metropolitan Division, a fresh start with a new club may be just what the doctor ordered for Jarry.

On last Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carton Hutton discuss Jarry’s season and where he could land in 2025-26.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Jarry could be the 1B or a backup to a good young goalie. I think about his time in Alberta during his junior hockey days, so what if you threw him behind Dustin Wolf with the Calgary Flames next season? “We know we can lean on you every week for a spot start, but your new job, your new chapter in your career is to be a good mentor to Dustin Wolf.”

Carter Hutton: I think there’s value there, but it depends on his character outside the room, because that’s so important. One thing that extended my career is that teams would rather have the devil you know. They knew that I could handle life off the rink.

That being said, the No. 1 thing is competing and playing well in the net, and I think he brings value there. Again, if something was to happen to Wolf, you know he can carry the mail and keep you in that playoff hunt, and that adds so much value to him moving forward into next season.
