Jarry’s shutout against Flames a hopeful sign of things to come

It’s never a dull moment in the Edmonton Oilers‘ crease. After it looked like they were finally going to get some stable goaltending from Devon Levi, an undisclosed injury as knocked him out for a couple weeks, joining Frederik Andersen who’s missed all of the regular season thus far.
That leaves Tristan Jarry as the Oilers’ best option in net, but he’s struggled since he was dealt to Edmonton last year. But Wednesday was a step in the right direction for Jarry, as he stopped all 24 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over the Calgary Flames.
Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton talked about Jarry’s strong performance and how much the Oilers need it right now on Daily Faceoff Live.
Tyler Yaremchuk: It’s pretty significant if you’re Tristan Jarry, who’s been sputtering out of the gates this season with the Oilers. I thought he was good against Detroit earlier in the week. With Devon Levi out, there’s a lot of pressure on Jarry to take the ball and run with it here for the next couple of weeks. And last night, a 24-save shutout. That’ll do it.
Carter Hutton: Yeah. Tristan Jarry controlled what he could last night. You can’t control if there’s going to be 10 shots or 100 shots. He went out and played his game in a situation where they needed to play well and they needed to find a way to win that game, especially after the Detroit loss. That’s a game where you really don’t want to let slip away and you did, and it is what it is. How do you bounce back? And that’s 2 losses, especially the game in Toronto.
Now you’re in a situation where you got Calgary, Battle of Alberta. I thought he answered the call and made timely saves. There’s a few saves in the second period when I thought Calgary was holding pace. They were going after Devin Cooley left, Dustin Wolf made a really good save on McDavid, a glove save. And then from there, it was like all Calgary in that second period generating chances. [Jarry] held the fort down, and then I feel like that flipped the script. It’s when you make those saves or when you don’t give up those goals, timely moments. And I thought last night was a great example of timely goaltending from Tristan Jarry.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Fans love to throw out, and coaches love to throw it out too, “We gotta play a full 60”. You’re never gonna play 60 minutes of dominant hockey. That just doesn’t happen in the NHL. The skill gap is too tight. There are always going to be 5-to-10 minute stretches in a game where you lose it a little bit and the other team starts to get their legs moving a bit. And we saw that last night.
So I like that you brought up the timely save, because you’re right. 24 saves, that doesn’t jump off the page. A shutout’s a shutout though. But you go back to that second period when the game was 2-0, and if one of those goes in on Jarry, totally different hockey game. So I do think he deserves a lot of credit for his play last night as the Oilers beat the Flames 4-0.
