Unlucky? Maybe. But the Red Wings are showing some red flags
The Detroit Red Wings are off to a 1-3-0 start to the season, and after four games, sit dead last in the Atlantic Division. Yes, it’s very early, but there’s growing concern coming out of Motown.
Patrick Kane hasn’t scored yet this year, recording just one assist. Vladimir Tarasenko has just one point in four games, meanwhile opening night starting goaltender Ville Husso was surprisingly waived by the Wings, after allowing four goals on 14 shots, in the season opener.
Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot continue to share the Red Wings’ crease. Lyon has yet to record a win, however, has posted a solid .929 save percentage. Talbot, on the other hand, has been very inconsistent to start his Red Wings’ tenure, and was pulled Thursday night against the New York Rangers, after allowing five goals on 19 shots.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli discussed what’s going on in Detroit and how the Red Wings, have some red flags.
Yaremchuk: Let’s start with the Detroit Red Wings, Frank. Who were taken down by the New York Rangers, for a second straight game. It was a 5-2 defeat…Detroit has been a tad unlucky…They are allowing the fifth-most shots 5-on-5, they’ve had a couple of rough goaltending performances, namely one from Ville Husso this season. When you look at a Red Wings team that is now 1-3 to start the year, do you go – ‘signs for concern’, or do you go – ‘well, they did lose twice to a really good Rangers’ team’.
Seravalli: Major red flags. It’s not for the P.D.O, obviously their goal-scoring will increase, to me, it’s the way they defend and their goaltending. I have said for awhile, that I’m not a believer in the Red Wings’ defense core. I don’t think it’s Stanley Cup Playoff caliber. And, beyond that, their goaltending leaves a ton to be desired.
You see Cam Talbot yanked last night after allowing five. Alex Lyon comes in, they’re carrying three goalies, they can’t get it right. They just can’t. I don’t know what the solution is there, because I don’t think there’s a short-term fix.
Some excitement today, Marco Kasper being recalled under emergency conditions, first-round pick. Obvious someone that (head coach) Derek Lalonde mentioned, that if he is coming up, it will be for a longer period of time. So, that parts exciting, but the emergency conditions, they sound like, it’s obviously a roster thing, but it kind of feels more like emergency conditions in terms of their season. I just think the Detroit Red Wings are stuck in neutral. And, I don’t know how they find a way out.
