The Utah Mammoth will be without centre Alex Kerfoot for at least the start of the 2025 NHL preseason. On Friday, the team announced that he had suffered a lower body injury and will be listed as week-to-week.

Kerfoot, 31, has been one of the NHL’s most durable athletes over the last four seasons, missing just one game over that spell. Yet, he could miss another game, with the new injury threatening his availability for Utah’s regular season opener against the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 9.

Last season, Kerfoot netted 11 goals and 37 points, while also posting 67 blocked shots with an average of 15:15 ice time per game. In his career, he has scored 98 goals and 292 points in 605 regular season games, having made his NHL debut in 2016 with the Avalanche.

In addition to his time with Utah and Colorado, the Vancouver native spent four seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, before joining the Arizona Coyotes for their final season ahead of the move to Salt Lake City, Utah.

A former standout with Harvard University, Kerfoot helped the Mammoth to a 38–31–13 record last season, as they missed out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs by seven points, finishing sixth in the Central Division.

When he returns this season, he will likely play a bottom six role as the Mammoth look to further their success and reach the postseason in their second season at the Delta Center and in Salt Lake City.

While the Mammoth start the regular season against on Oct. 9, they open their preseason schedule against the same opponent, the Avalanche, with split squad games in both Colorado and Utah on Sept. 21.

Kerfoot’s one-year contract with the Mammoth runs through the end of the 2025-26 season, with a cap-hit of $3 million.
