What the Utah Mammoth need the most this offseason

The Utah Mammoth, or the team formerly known as Utah Hockey Club, finished their first season outside of the Arizona desert with a 38-31-13 record and 89 points, sixth in the Central Division and seven points back of a Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
While it wasn’t the result they wanted, the team showed a lot of positives in 2024-25, highlighted by captain Clayton Keller posting a career-high 90 points, as well as 60-point campaigns from Logan Cooley, Nick Schmaltz and Dylan Guenther. Now with more than $20 million in cap space going into the summer, questions now surround the Mammoth as to where they plan on allocating assets to improve their lineup in 2025-26.
On Friday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk are joined by KSL Sports reporter Cole Bagley to talk Mammoth hockey and where Utah will focus this summer.
Tyler Yaremchuk: As Utah goes into their first offseason as the Mammoth, what’s their biggest need? What’s on Bill Armstrong’s shopping list?
Cole Bagley: Looking ahead to the offseason, this is going to be an itneresting summer for the Mammoth. I think a lot hinges on what they’re able to accomplish, but there’s a lot of different ways this can go. One thing I think people are looking past is that they need another goaltender. Obviously, all due respect to Connor Ingram, but there’s no sign he’ll be ready to go at the beginning of next season, so that’s something they’ll take a look at.
What kind of became obvious is they need size and scoring. They have a lot of talneted youth up front with Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther, and a lot of talent in Clayton Keller, but they need more size. Some guys who will go battle in the dirty areas and help them score, to kind of bridge that gap, offensively.
Their blue line is fine, but they need more help up front to better their plus-minus and hopefully win. Some of those close games they lost in overtime or those one-shot, one-goal games were the difference between making the playoffs or not.
