The Vancouver Canucks have announced that forwards Elias Pettersson and Nils Hoglander will not return to Saturday’s matinee game versus the New York Rangers.

The Rangers took the game 5-3 in what was a hectic third period which would be ended by former Canucks forward J.T. Miller firing a shot into the empty net.

Hoglander logged 12 shifts, one shot and 7:03 minutes of ice time while Pettersson logged 14 shifts, one hit and 7:50 minutes of ice time.

Pettersson has tallied 15 goals and 30 assists for 45 points in 64 games this season. Pettersson is in the first year of an eight-year pact that carries an $11.6-million annual average value, per PuckPedia, the fifth-highest salary cap hit across the NHL. The 26-year-old Swedish-born forward is two years from a career season where he finished with 102 points, 39 goals, and 63 assists coming in 80 outings. Pettersson also had a successful showing during the 2023-24 campaign as he registered 34 goals and 55 assists for 89 points in 82 games.

Hoglander has tallied six goals and 15 assists for 21 points in 65 games this season. Hoglander signed a three-year, $3 million AAV extension at the beginning of the season.

In 80 games, he scored a career-high 24 goals and 36 points. He also played in 11 of Vancouver’s games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, posting a goal and an assist. The Canucks were ultimately eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in seven games in the Pacific Division Final.

Höglander was originally taken by the Canucks in the second round, 40th overall, in the 2019 NHL Draft. He would come over from his native Sweden in 2020-21 and had a great rookie season, scoring 27 points in 56 games. His production diminished a little in 2021-22, with the Rögle BK product seeing time in the American Hockey League with the Abbotsford Canucks in 2022-23.
