The Canucks want to keep Brock Boeser – but will they?

As if this season couldn’t get any worse for the Vancouver Canucks.
Having already lost one star player in J.T. Miller and potentially losing another in Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser may be on his way out as well. He’s in some trade rumours as he and the Canucks struggle to agree on a contract extension, as the two parties are far apart on the term of the deal.
Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talked about Boeser and how the Canucks want to get a deal done, along with how they could make that happen, on Daily Faceoff Live.
Frank Seravalli: I think it could extend well beyond the deadline. I’ve said this for a couple weeks now, the Canucks want to resign Boeser, they’re hung up on the term. Boeser is a loyal guy and wants to be in Vancouver.
I think he’s been rattled by the way that this is unfolded and how long it’s taken. I think he was bothered by the idea that, after all this track record, that Vancouver said after the 40-goal season to basically go out, prove it, and do it again. He’s on track for 28 goals, and he missed 7 games.
The Canucks either add one year, they offered five [years] by eight [million dollars], make it six by eight and call it a day. Or do they use that extra time to find a deal and try and get themselves into the playoffs or do they just cut bait and say whatever happens this year, whether they get in or we miss, it’s okay, they don’t need Brock Boeser.
I just don’t think they can come to that conclusion yet. And I think with all the offense that’s eroded from that team in JT Miller and now potentially Elias Pettersson in the summer, who’s going to score them 30 goals or close to it? And it’s not that big of an AAV jump. I think you leave the term for the next person to figure out.
Tyler Yaremchuk: The term will make it more palatable down the line. It’s not like Brock Boeser is a 31 year old UFA.
