Canucks’ Kiefer Sherwood day-to-day with undisclosed injury

After missing Saturday’s contest against the Washington Capitals, Kiefer Sherwood of the Vancouver Canucks remains sidelined for the immediate future due to an undisclosed injury.

On Monday, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet confirmed to Jeff Paterson of Canucks Army that the left winger will not join the team on the beginning of its upcoming three-game road trip. Tocchet added that while Sherwood will miss Monday’s contest against the St. Louis Blues, he left open the possibility that Sherwood could re-enter the lineup Wednesday versus the Nashville Predators or Friday against the Dallas Stars.

Skating in his first season with the Canucks, Sherwood has made 47 appearances in which he has registered 13 goals and eight assists for 21 points with 22 penalty minutes. Sherwood also ranks first league-wide with 273 hits, putting him 93 ahead of second-place Garnet Hathaway of the Philadelphia Flyers.

As part of the Predators in 2023-24, Sherwood notched a career-high 27 points counting 10 goals and 17 assists through 68 contests, while his 234 hits ranked 15th-best league-wide at season’s end.

In July, the Canucks inked Sherwood, then an unrestricted free agent, to a two-year contract that carries a $1.5-million annual average value, per PuckPedia.

In all, through 234 career contests with the Anaheim Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Predators, and Canucks, Sherwood has tallied 37 goals and 42 assists for 79 points. A graduate of the NCAA’s Miami RedHawks, Sherwood signed with the Ducks in 2018 as an undrafted free agent.

Entering Monday’s contest against the Blues, the Canucks sit 21-17-10 on the season and three points back of the Pacific Division rival Calgary Flames for the second wildcard seed in the Western Conference. The Canucks and Blues connected once previously this season, a mid-December contest in which the Blues prevailed 4-3 in overtime. Sherwood had a team-leading eight hits in the game, while Canucks netminder Thatcher Demko stopped 21 shots to secure a single point for Vancouver.
