Vancouver Canucks sign defenseman Carson Soucy to three-year contract
Big defenseman Carson Soucy is sticking around in the Pacific Northwest.
The Vancouver Canucks have signed Soucy to a three-year contract, Sportsnet’s Gene Principe reported Saturday afternoon.
Soucy, 28, racked up three goals and 16 points while averaging 16:18 in 78 games with the Seattle Kraken during the 2022–23 regular season.
The six-foot-five defenseman, who shoots left, added a goal and an assist while logging 14:35 in 14 games with the Kraken in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Soucy’s new contract with the Canucks reportedly carries a $3.25 million cap hit.
The Minnesota Wild originally selected Soucy in the fifth round (No. 137 overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft. The Viking, Alberta product played four seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth before signing with the Wild in 2017.
Soucy spent parts of three seasons with the Wild before being claimed by the Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. He scored a career-high 10 goals and 21 points in 64 games with Seattle in the 2021–22 season.
Through 250 games over parts of five NHL seasons with the Wild and Kraken, Soucy has collected 21 goals and 68 points. He’s added two points (one goal, one assist) in 26 Stanley Cup Playoff contests.
Soucy will now compete for ice time as part of a crowded Canucks defensive group that also includes Quinn Hughes, Filip Hronek, Tyler Myers, Akito Hirose, Christian Wolanin, and the newly-signed Ian Cole. The Canucks also inked forward Teddy Blueger to a one-year deal on Saturday.
