Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract with goaltender Ty Young.

Young was initially selected in the fifth round, No. 144 overall, by the Canucks in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Young spent the 2022-23 season with the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He appeared in a career-high 34 games, posting a 15-13-4-9 record to go along with a 3.89 goals-against average and .889 save percentage. Young was also between the pipes for eight WHL playoff contests, sending Prince George to the Western Conference Semi-finals.

“Ty has made some improvements since we drafted him last year, and we were pleased to see him play meaningful games in the WHL playoffs,” said Allvin. “He has good size, and our goalie development team sees a lot of potential in his game if he continues to put in the work and follow the plan we have put in place for him moving forward.”

During the 2021-22 campaign, Young split time between the Cougars and the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). While with the Cougars, the Coaldale, Alberta, product posted a 6-9-3 record, a 3.50 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage in 23 games. While playing for the Canucks, he ranked tied for second league-wide with a .918 save percentage while also registering a 3.38 goals-against average throughout 17 games of action.

Young was one of five players cut by the Canucks and sent back to major junior following the club’s 10-0 preseason loss to the Calgary Flames on Sunday. Young will return to the Cougars for the 2023-2 campaign, where he looks to man the starter position and help get the Cougars into a playoff spot.
