Canucks sign Marcus Pettersson to a six-year contract extension

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenseman Marcus Pettersson to a six-year contract extension worth $5.5 million per season, the club announced Wednesday.

Acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday in exchange for four pieces including a conditional first-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, Pettersson has since made two appearances with the Canucks in which he has registered three shots while averaging 24:30 in ice time.

“In just a couple of games, Marcus has already shown us the type of leadership, poise, and character that we want in a top-four defenseman,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. “He has a calming influence on the ice, uses his long reach and hockey smarts to break up plays, and has a good first pass to help us create more offensively. We are extremely happy to get this deal done and look forward to working with him in both the short term and long term.”

Prior to joining the Canucks, Pettersson saw 47 contests with the Penguins this season in which he tallied three goals and 15 assists for 18 points coupled with 25 penalty minutes and a minus-two rating.

Originally chosen 38th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2014 NHL Draft, Pettersson has seen 493 career contests counting stops with the Ducks, Penguins, and Canucks in which he has registered 17 goals and 135 assists for 154 points. The 28-year-old Swedish-born rearguard reached a career high of 30 points with the Penguins last season.

For the Canucks, the club sits 24-18-11 on the season and just short of the second wildcard seed in the Western Conference – currently held by the Pacific Division rival Calgary Flames – due to a tie-breaker. After shutting out the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday, the Canucks will aim for their second-straight victory when the club retakes the ice Thursday against the San Jose Sharks.
