Vancouver Cnaucks general manager Patrik Allvin announced that the club had signed defenseman Sawyer Mynio to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Mynio was selected in the third round, No. 89 overall, by the Canucks at the 2023 NHL Draft.

The Kamloops, British Columbia product, spent the 2022-23 season with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he compiled five goals, and 26 assists for 31 points in 68 regular season games. He added four points in 19 WHL Playoff contests as the Thunderbirds went on to capture the WHL Championship. Mynio then participated in the 2023 KIA Memorial Cup, hosted in his hometown of Kamloops; he was held pointless through five games.

“Sawyer has gained some valuable experience since we drafted him, taking part in our summer development camp, Penticton Young Stars Tournament and our Training Camp in Victoria,” said GM Patrik Allvin. “We have liked the way he has looked on the ice, and our staff is looking forward to helping him improve his game and skillset in the years to come.”

Mynio was one of five players cut by the Canucks Monday morning following their training camp and first preseason game. He will return to the WHL to play for Seattle and will have a much bigger role moving forward with the departure of many talented blueliners. In 115 career WHL games, all played with Seattle, the 6-foot-one defenseman has notched nine goals, and 33 assists for 42 points in that frame. He has added four points in 40 WHL Playoff contests.

The Canucks play their next preseason game on Wednesday, Sept. 27 against the Edmonton Oilers.
