Vancouver Canucks’ Tyler Myers week-to-week with lower-body injury
Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet has announced that defenseman Tyler Myers will be out of the lineup on a week-to-week basis due to a lower-body injury.
It’s unclear as to what caused the injury to Myers, 34, as there wasn’t any play that occurred during Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings that looked like it may have hurt the Houston, Texas product before he left the game early in the third period. There’s also no further information on the specifics of the injury or when his likely return date is, but the fact that it’s week-to-week means there’s a solid chance that he could return by the playoffs.
Myers has been surprisingly productive for the Canucks this season, as he has 4 goals and 19 assists for 23 points in 62 games. That’s already his most productive season since joining the Canucks in 2019, and before the injury he was on pace to finish with 30 points, which would have been the fifth time he’s hit that mark in his career.
Myers is the former 12th-overall pick of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2008 NHL Draft, making his NHL debut in 2009 and winning the Calder Trophy that season. He spent another five seasons with the Sabres before he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets partway through the 2014-15 season as part of the return for Evander Kane, and went on to play parts of five seasons in Winnipeg before he departed for free agency in 2019.
Myers then went on to sign a five-year contract with a $6 million cap hit with the Canucks in the 2019 offseason, a contract that he is currently in the final year of. He will be an unrestricted free agent in the 2024 offseason.
The Canucks currently sit in first in the Pacific Division with a 38-17-7 record, and are just one point behind the Florida Panthers and Boston Bruins for the best record in the league. Vancouver will look to snap back-to-back losses when they visit the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday at 8 p.m. EST.
