Alex Ovechkin finally broke a goalless streak that lasted seven months.

Well, sort of. The last time the Washington Capitals’ forward scored a goal in the regular season was last March. If you combine the last five games of the 2022-23 campaign and the first four of 2023-24, Ovechkin’s nine-game goalless drought is one of the longest of his career.

With ten seconds left in the second period in Tuesday’s matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the 38-year-old winger scored a power play goal to snap the streak and record his first of the season. Now with 823 career goals, the No. 2 all-time scorer is 71 goals from tying Wayne Gretzky for first on the all-time list.

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss Ovechkin’s breakout game and share a few of the more mind-boggling stats from the Capitals’ captain.

Tyler Yaremchuk: What a performance by Ovechkin last night. He scores a goal on what felt like his 13th shot of the game, and it feels like he heard all the noise surrounding him the last few days and thought, “Hold on, you think I’m washed? You think I’m heading to the 18th green on my career? No no no, I still got it.”

Frank Seravalli: I mean, he’s still probably coming down the 17th fairway right now, and he hasn’t looked like himself up to this point, starting the season with back-to-back games without a shot. He made up for it with a massive night against the Maple Leafs.

What’s bananas about Oveckin’s first goal is that that was his 300th power play goal as a Washington Capital. It also happened to line up that it was the 3,000th power play goal in Capitals’ franchise history. That means that Ovechkin accounts for 10 percent of the entire franchise’s power play goals.
