Washington Capitals star, Alexander Ovechkin, is getting closer to Wayne Gretzky’s record.

On Wednesday, the 39-year-old scored his 892nd goal for the Capitals, as they trailed the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 through 40 minutes at the Lenovo Center. The goal brings him within just three of making NHL history and passing Gretzky’s mark of 894 regular season tallies.

It’s also his 39th goal of the 2024-25 NHL regular season, scored on a vintage one-timer from the top of the faceoff circles as part of the Capitals’ 5-on-3 powerplay. Jakob Chychrun and Dylan Strome got the assists on the play, with Ovechkin’s shot clocking in at 89 MPH, according to TNT’s broadcast.

Through 59 games, Ovechkin has 39 goals and 26 assists for 64 points, bringing his career total to 892 goals, 724 assists and 1,616 points. Additionally, he’s scored 72 goals and 141 points in 151 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Despite missing time due to injuries earlier in the season, the ailments haven’t slowed down Ovechkin’s hunt for the all-time scoring record, and he will have the Capitals’ seven remaining games to score three goals and reach the mark this season.

While he is on pace for more than 40 goals, he likely would have crested the 50-goal mark if it weren’t for his injuries. The native of Moscow, Russia has played in just 58 of Washington’s 74 games this season.

In February, he became the fourth player over the age of 39 to put up 30 goals or more in a single NHL campaign.

Sitting first in the Metropolitan Division, the Capitals see out their final stretch games with contests against the Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins.
